We had a good turnout tonight, and the weather was great.  There are some good times posted below, too!

Special notes:
1.  Sorry about the wonky lineup of what should’ve been a nice copy of my Excel spreadsheet, but it wouldn’t paste correctly for some unknown reason.  I had to hit the spacebar a bazillion times to get this to turn out in a readable form.

2.  If you have any timing corrections to submit, I’m always happy to hear them.

However, please remember, if I (Teddie) am your timer for the evening, I declare the official start/finish line at the beginning of the race.  It can be different from week to week depending on where the OBRA race camera is located.  We use either the western line or the eastern line to prevent interference with the camera. So if you are personally timing yourself and it differs a teeny from what I record, it might be because you used a different finish line.

I was absent this evening, and I got word that the timing sheet didn’t get picked up.  But by the looks of next week’s timing sheet, I sort of wonder if the OBRA timer wrote anything down.

Anyway, if it turns up and has viable information on it, I will edit this post.

I do have the weather conditions and attending skaters, though.

Earlier rain caused the back section to be quite wet.  A few very light showers blew through during our time on the track, but by 6pm, the back section had dried up in enough spots that we had no problems pushing through.  The skating was actually quite enjoyable, in spite of the dampness.

Our first three Mondays were sparsely attended probably due to the threat of rain.  “Social Skate” was declared for each of these evenings, and a good time was had by all.

New racers are welcomed and encouraged. Just show up with a helmet (REQUIRED!)
and skates, ready to race. Experienced racers are on hand to answer questions
and provide tips.

WHERE: Portland International Raceway

1940 N Victory Blvd., Portland OR 97217

Directions: From I-5 take exit #306b west. The racetrack is located
immediately west of the freeway.

WHEN:  Track opens for warmup at 5:00 p.m. Starting gun at 5:45 p.m.

HELMETS REQUIRED!  NO EXCEPTIONS!

WHAT:

6- to 8-mile event for expert skaters

4- to 6-mile event for fitness skaters

Potluck Barbeques on occasion

COST: $7.50 entry (price subject to change)

COURSE:  The course is a flat and wide 1.9-mile loop, with excellent,
quality pavement and is closed to all car traffic.

On our last Monday Night PIR Race, we woke up with an overhyped prediction of rain from the local media.  We now give thanks to Robert P. for mustering up a special anti-rain mojo, effectively driving the clouds away. Yay!  It turned out to be a beautiful evening for skating and camaraderie.

So here’s the dealio with the times:  This “timer” person assigned to us has failed to enter seconds the past couple of races.  Unless otherwise noted, our times can be off by as much as 59 seconds.  Yeah, almost a full minute.  Sure, it could also be off as little as 1 second, but in our world, tenths of seconds matter.  And it doesn’t take much more skating ability to bump that up to hundredths of seconds making a difference.

Anyway, a few of us carried our own timing devices, and you can see how far off the OBRA timer’s entries are.  The accurate times are noted, in addition to the OBRA timer’s entries.

The timing worksheet was replete with errors and inaccuracies, and for a number of skaters no time was written down.  I’m done struggling with trying to decipher the notes, so what I was able to put together is posted below.  Again the timing person wrote the times down as the clock runs.  Using Ed Rybeck’s Excel formula – thank you Ed! — we have extra (and some of it erroneous) information to look at.

Sherrell measured the temperature of the track pavement and got a reading of 131 degrees!  Yeah, you could fry an egg on it.

Thank you for that interesting bit of information, Sherrell, and a further THANK YOU for stepping in and taking over the timing tonight.  Your providing the split times is a bonus that we especially appreciate!

A gigantic thank you to ED RYBECK for deciphering and calculating the timer’s sheet this week! I’ve been swamped with a rush job the past couple of weeks, and Ed graciously took the timer’s messy notes and created a beautiful spreadsheet for us.  The timer recorded actual clock time instead of using a stop watch and then failed to log the times for all skaters.

Ed also calculated the split times, and those are included after the running times.

It was a beautiful eve at PIR tonight, concluding with a fantastic, almost photo finish between Jason and Spencer.  Spencer pulled off an eagle hawk, only to have Jason surge past, nipping him at the line for the win.  Wow!
